Most people begin the design of a home by asking questions about architecture — how many bedrooms, what style, how much square footage. Those are important questions. They simply aren't the first ones.

I've spent nearly four decades designing homes, homesteads, communities, and landscapes across North and Central America, and in that time I've learned something that quietly changed the way I practice: the most successful projects rarely begin with architecture. They begin with people.

Long before we talk about walls, windows, or rooflines, we begin with a much deeper conversation — how do you hope to live? That question changes everything, because a meaningful home is never simply a building. It's where morning routines become traditions, where children become adults, where friendships deepen and meaningful work gets done, where gardens mature and grandchildren learn to gather, where ordinary days quietly become unforgettable.

Architecture cannot create those moments, but it can make them possible. That has become the foundation of my work. I don't begin by designing houses — I begin by helping people discover the life they hope to build. Only then do we start designing the place that can faithfully support it.

Designing From the Inside Out

Many architects begin with a building. I begin with a conversation. Before a single line is drawn, I ask clients to work through The Art of Place, a guide I've created to explore their values, routines, hopes, memories, relationships, and the kind of life they want their home to support. By the time we begin designing, something remarkable has happened: the architecture is no longer leading the conversation — their life is. Every decision, from where the house sits on the land to how morning light enters the kitchen, has a purpose rooted in who they are rather than in current trends or preconceived ideas about what a home should be. Architecture becomes less about personal expression and more about faithful response.

Listening Before Designing

I believe every property already has something to say — through its light, its winds, its trees, its topography, its water, its quiet places. Good design begins by listening before deciding. Rather than imposing architecture on the land, I try to understand the character of a place so thoroughly that the design feels as though it belongs there, as though it could never have been anywhere else. When architecture grows naturally from both the people and the land, it stops feeling manufactured. It begins feeling inevitable.

Generative Places

Over the years I've become less interested in designing impressive buildings and much more interested in designing generative places — places that quietly give back. Places that produce more than shelter, more than beauty, more than efficiency; places that cultivate gratitude, curiosity, craftsmanship, hospitality, stewardship, and belonging. Places where gardens become meals, porches become conversations, workshops become creativity, and walking paths become reflection. Places that don't simply support life, but help it flourish. I believe the greatest measure of a place isn't what it gives to us — it's what it continues giving long after we're gone.

A Personal Practice

BlissWorks is intentionally a small practice. I work directly with every client, every conversation, every design, taking on only a handful of projects each year so each one receives the time, thought, and care it deserves. Design, for me, has never been about producing more projects. It has always been about creating better places — places worth living, places worth remembering, places that quietly improve the lives of the people who call them home.

My Hope

When people ask what I do, it's easy to say that I design homes. But that has never felt like the whole truth. What I really hope to do is help people discover the life they want to build, and then create a place that makes that life possible. Because in the end, I do not simply design places for people to live. I design places that help people become.
