Project Management/Development

It seems getting the concept of a home built out as envisioned in the plans is a struggle in most cultures. For sixteen years I have worked in the US and the Latin cultures simultaneously. What I have noticed is the decline of one and the ascension of the other.  In the US, the trades are highly motivated by money and the rate at which they can get to payment.  This, coupled with an all encompassing slide toward mediocrity, leaves a contractor and homeowner in a futile chase of quality and productivity, all the while watching budgets race out of control while paying the highest wages for less.  For this reason I have embraced management in the Latin cultures.

I have developed a process of hiring workers and developing a team that is interested in the end product and not the final payment. The process has a greater emphasis put on team build concepts and the “on the fly” design process than subcontractors tasking out their isolated aspect of the whole. The management is much more demanding and detail oriented but much more rewarding. The development of a project, for me, is more like creating a current that everyone steps into and knows where they are going. It feels more like working with aspiring artists that trades people. There is a greater sense of pride in work while reasonable wages allows the project aspirations to come to fruition.
